A carnival atmosphere prevailed in the New England hamlet (population 5,891 except on Patriot’s Day) as the 83rd edition of America’s premier marathon got underway on a cool (40° ) drizzly day.
At the crack of the gun the mass exodus toward Boston had officially begun, but most of the record field of 10,000 starters (7,877 official entrants) weren’t going anywhere – at least, not for a while.
Seven minutes and 32 seconds had elapsed by the time everybody made it across the starting line. By then the leaders were more than a mile and a half down the road.
